Psoriasis: What can you do about it in the community pharmacy?

Psoriasis is a chronic dermatological disease that is commonly seen in Malaysia. The skin condition originates from a deranged and overactive immune system, causing the skin to become inflamed and flaky. Psoriasis is incurable, and generally the condition of the disease will fluctuate between periods of relapse and remission with varying severity. How can community pharmacists advise our patients, to help them if they suffer from this?

In my experience, I have encountered a few cases of psoriasis in the pharmacy. Most situations would be patients seeking steroid creams over the counter as they have perhaps run out of their prescription medication. Some undiagnosed cases may come in seeking medical advice. Both these situations will involve the pharmacists' expertise, asking a series of questions to eliminate other possible illnesses and counselling on medication use.
