Something worth reading: NICE guidelines on managing patients with multimorbidity

NICE has published a guideline that aims to provide a patient centered approach to treatment rather than a disease centered approach. The goal is to improve quality of life by promoting wholistic care by taking into consideration all comorbidities, risk factors, medications and lifestyle choices of the patient. This set of pathways/recommendations actually highlights one of the common mistakes we clinicians make which is focusing on specific dieases and following disease specific guidelines only and forgetting to take into consideration the multiple comorbidities that are usually present. Hopefully, there will be more of these pathways that are locally based so that we could tailor management of our patients with the resources that are available in our setting.
