Why being a paediatrician isn’t easy

Shared by:

Paediatrics is often mislabelled as an “easy” specialisation for doctors to choose, with the misconception that paediatricians’ jobs revolve around giving routine shots and treating the common cold. However, this could not be further from the truth.

Mark Edmon Tan Thanks for tagging me into the topic. For lacerations of the face, we usually do the surgery under sedation or general anesthesia depending on the estimated length of the procedure. Performing reconstructive suturing for facial lacerations under local anesthesia is very tedious, and it can also have an adverse effect on cosmesis if done hurriedly. For older children who are more cooperative, bedsid...

Rajinda Asalage The practice of giving general anesthesia for suturing lacerations surprised me. I did some quick browsing about the side effects of general anesthesia and it is mainly irritability, fatigue, nausea, and dizziness. Only with repeated exposure does a child become at risk for learning disabilities and behavioral problems. It is a good thing that the practice of giving such anesthesia is under the cl...

Mark Edmon Tan What you have said is absolutely correct. Not only the history taking and examination, even at the procedures just like you said we get into trouble most of the time. That is very true it is much harder in paediatric surgical units than in paediatric medical units. Most of the time that is because of the procedures. We do suturing of the lacerations under general anaesthesia in Sri Lanka not like f...

Rajinda Asalage That makes it even tougher if you are working in a pediatric surgery unit. The situation should really be tough if a child needs some sutures for an open wound. I've seen my friend do stitches to kids it in the emergency ward and it always ends up with a shrieking kid and anxious parents. The practice in our country, well most hospitals, is to let the parents step out of the room if a procedur...

After finishing the university life and completing the degree, you would answer the question 'What is your preferred speciality?' as paediatrics. But once you get into the field I am quite sure that you would change your preference because then only you will realize how hard to do it. I am working in a paediatric hospital. Even though it is a paediatric surgical unit, the experience is almost same because we have to work there with little children. Actually it is very hard to take a deta...

Mark Edmon Tan it remains to be very challenging to deal with the family but as I said as long its constructive I am perfectly fine. I think we all like the involved family. The kind that is interactive with the health care of the child. I have encountered those who come to the ER or in telemedicine to confirm that the diagnosis they googled is the right one. There is a high tendency for them to come up with an e...

Marinelle Castro The grandparents should be really included in this topic. Thank you for sharing your keen observation! Grandparents have that innate knack for providing tender, loving, and spoiling care to their grandchildren. Most children view their grandparents as their heroes because of this trait. However, it can spin off in a negative way once a child faces illness or discomfort. They can really be confron...

Jennifer Winter Well said! Filipino doctors have to consider that they will be encountering concerns of both parents, grandparents, and other caregivers in most cases. As you have stated, parents who google symptoms or illnesses are only doing their due diligence. It would even be more concerning if parents who have unlimited access to internet are not curious about their child's condition. As for those who f...

Habiba Twakkol Oh yes, it is fun to deal with those cute, little patients. The fun stops when trust between parents and healthcare professionals cannot be made. It is terrifying when we hear that some parents try to give medication with instructions they obtained from the internet. It is sad because data gathered from the internet often lead to under dosing or inappropriate medications. The general public has to ...

Heena Pohani Thank you for sharing your experience with encountering pediatric patients. This topic is truly not exclusive to pediatricians as we all encounter pediatric consults. I agree with your statement that the parents can be overstepping boundaries most of the time. They have a bias with how they expect their child to be managed/treated. Some are parent doctor shoppers even. Something we have not discussed...

Maria Cristina Inserto Thank you for sharing your experience. That is a different situation indeed. One traumatic experience can alter the child's level of trust with healthcare providers. Unfortunately, the traumatic incident happened before a trip to your clinic. It becomes more chaotic when both parents and grandparents are inside the consultation room. Grandparents, thank God for having them, are spoilers ...

Madhubabu kaaja You were correct with stating that I am busy with residency. It is nice to see you again in the MIMS community. I agree that it is very hard to treat newborn patients. In fact, I believe it would be one of the hardest case any doctor will encounter. Anxious parents will definitely ask a lot of questions and become impatient to get their newborn out of harm's way. It is really frustrating for ne...

Mark Edmon Tan I agree that the article was very accurate in describing the hurdles of being a pediatrician. But I think the article missed one important point --- THE GRANDPARENTS! Since I also handle pediatric patients with neurologic conditions, I have a first-hand experience in communicating with parents and grandparents. So far, I've had the most challenging experiences with grandparents because they ha...

ha! Whoever said Pediatrics is "easy" is highly mistaken. I wanted to go into Pediatrics upon entering medical school but gradually began to change my mind as the years progressed as I saw the huge difficulties a Pediatrician would encounter. Definitely treating the parents or here in the Philippines it would be treating the whole family is something that needs to be dealt with. The author mentioned the "cyberchondriac parent". I don't mind the parent who research his/her...

Mark Edmon Tan thank you for sharing this article to be discussed it is really important, pediatricians work in my opinion is not easy at all even it may seems funny to deal with babies and kids.
It is even hard to control a shy child to be examined and as mentioned in the article the symptoms you take from a second person who are parents.
Also dealing with educated parents who have informations or google...

It is really a difficult job to be a paediatrician. Even I face many problems when I do the dental treatment of children. It depends upon the age of the child, still, specialised skills are necessary to diagnose and treat paediatric patients. The common problems faced by a paediatrician are mentioned in this article. I agree many times, it becomes difficult choice when you're treating a child whose parent is not at all complying with the mode of treatment and has his or her own set of expect...

Children are very fun to treat, but sometimes it is quite a struggle. The struggle does not end with the child, too, because you have to deal with the parents too (or any companion the child came in with). Sometimes you're dealing with the mother, father and grandparents. One time I had a patient who I used to really have no problem treating, but the mother said he had a bad appointment in the hospital and it made him a little scared of things after that. It was so hard because all the rappo...

HI Dr.Mark Edmon Tan,Good morning. where are you these days, I thought you might busy with your work. Ok, Now I am happy to see you here. Let us enter into topic. The author has nailed all the points of difficulties with the modern age parents. Awesome parents, more common with mothers, ferret out the root of a child's illness with research. Since the internet gives information about the possible diagnosis, parents have often regarded it as the bible for taking care of their child's symptoms. Pediatricians must warn parents about the hazards of "googling" their child's illness, especially with self-medication. One difficulty with ped...
