A 2016 analysis of the Gingko Evaluation of Memory Study explored the link between the Alzheimer’s disease-associated protein amyloid beta and walking speed in elderly patients without dementia. Amyloid beta was moderately associated with reduced walking speed, though the contribution of cognitive impairment and having the e4 allele of the APOE gene – a strong risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease – to this association was significant.
