The National Youth Commission (NYC) expressed concern yesterday over the rising number of young Filipinos testing positive for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), which it described as a worsening “youth epidemic” in the country.

This is a very alarming news for the Philippines. The age bracket of 15 to 24 years old is really crucial because these are the young adults that will soon transition to adulthood. Unfortunately, HIV is an epidemic in the Philippines and sadly we are seeing younger people who die from full-blown AIDS. In my experience, the youngest patient who died due to CNS infections as a result of AIDS is in his early 20's. This leads me to think that the incubation period for HIV infection is shorter, and the reason for which remains unclear. Its true that HIV is no longer a terminal disease.
