A cancer diagnosis sometimes drives patients to engage in any life saving or seemingly preventive measures. What is not often shared is the evidence that suggests that patients do not benefit from routine testing as such.

Overdiagnosing diseases that were never going to prevail in the first place or cause any problems has become a major topic of discussion in many screening programmes. Although the marketing sounds good – to enable patients to detect diseases early, while it is still in a stage which is easily treated – the reality lies in more unfavourable truths which doctors know but often do not adequately communicate to their patients.
