Resistance to 'Last Resort' Antibiotics Being Spread to Humans by Flies

The agricultural industry has long been considered an enemy of humanity when it comes to recklessly pumping antibiotics into animals. In further evidence that this practice is fueling a public health crisis, a new study has found a disconcerting trend at Chinese farms: flies are spreading the gene that gives bacteria resistance to our strongest antibiotics, and it’s showing up in hospitalized humans.

Antibiotics resistance is a bane of our modern medicine. The topic of antibiotics resistance is one which has been discussed on this part of the forum multiple times. In this article, studies by scientists from US in the China have found that dogs feces carry the the resistance gene for MCR-1 and the flies also contain it. In a subsequent study, it was found that swallows also have the gene as well. This makes it very likely that the reisistance will be spread to South East Asia.
