Hong Kong confirmed world’s first case of Japanese encephalitis transmitted by blood transfusion

The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health (DH) confirmed the world’s first case of Japanese encephalitis (JE) transmitted by blood transfusion in hospital on 21 July. Laboratory investigations revealed residual samples of the blood transfused to the patient tested positive for JE virus, both originating from the same donation.
