Hong Kong government embarks to provide PCV13 to eligible elderly persons in October

The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health (DH) announced on 31 July that free or subsidised 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13) will be provided to the eligible high-risk elderly persons starting from the coming vaccination programmes to strengthen their immunity against pneumococcal infection. The Hospital Authority (HA) will continue take part in the programme, and the first phase will commence together with seasonal influenza vaccination in October.

The decision to provide subsidy for PCV13 vaccination of older adults in Hong Kong and in any country where PCV13 vaccination of children is widespread is unwise. PCV13 vaccination of children reduces pneumococcal nasopharyngeal carriage, and this leads to indirect protection of older adults. As a result, in many countries PCV13 vaccination of children alone has already caused a reduction of both invasive pneumococcal disease and nonbacteremic pneumococcal pneumonia in older adults.
