Dr Marshall Klaus advocated for early attachments between mothers and their newborns during his lifetime career as a neonatologist. His noble cause came about from observing babies in neonatal care units who struggled to bond with their mothers due to the separation after birth. Dr Klaus later created a new community of women who empower mothers before, during and after births – called doulas – who have changed birthing experiences for many women.
