I agree with Jennifer. I used to like OBGYN but I can't deal with that much stressful lifestyle (being on call always and the potential lawsuits), although it is darn so interesting. If I have to call OBGYNE a lover, OB is "the one you had loved so much but not meant to be."

I am aiming to be a plastic surgeon. Not just for satisfying a person's vanity, but something with a more meaningful purpose. I decided to take on a specialty for a reason that makes me feel &quo...

I am an ENFP and the fields compatible are Neurology, Psychiatry, OB/GYN and Pediatrics. Before starting med school, I was contemplating about being a psychiatrist or a developmental pediatrician. I always ponder about what could be done to better the society. I wanted to help build an emotionally and mentally healthy society be helping people being mentally and emotionally healthy. I also always wanted to help children, especially those with special needs. I have been set on those goals until r...

@Virgilio: I cannot agree with you more. The image of a plastic surgeon is merely the ability to do face lifts, tummy tucks, blepharoplasties, breast augmentation and the like. There is nothing wrong with doing those surgeries as they are very uplifting for the patients but it just labels the plastic surgeon as an image of vanity. If you get into a freak car accident and your face is distorted wouldn't you want to be able to look in the mirror and recognize the person looking back at you? As...

Medicine is a very versatile and diversified career. Different specialties require and attract a certain trait of qualities in a doctor. For example, the stereotypical surgeon is someone who does things very fast, confident, decisive and not so patient, whereas a internal medicine physician or a geriatrician is someone who is patient, thorough and meticulous to details. Pathologists and radiologist dislikes patient interactions, and female generally prefers disciplines like endocrine or paediatr...

It is very important to do what you like. That is the advice I give to students who have completed their training in basic general surgery and want to choose a sub speciality for their further studies. The choice of your ultimate vocation should be made not by how much money you will make or how your lifestyle would be, but by the fact that whether you would gain satisfaction by carrying out that same activity at least for the next 20 years. Having said that, if one receives counselling at the r...

Doctors are often steriotyped based on their field of specialization, in which it should not be the case. I always wanted to be a psychiatrist but public health service is my passion so I set aside psychiatry for now. In the Philippines, when you are a general practitioner or a government physician, you are often looked down by other specialist physicians. When you go into the field of psychiatry as your training, you are referred to as lazy and being laid back. This should not be the case since...

Plastic surgeons are often misunderstood in the medical field. Sure, you want to make people look better, but it's not all about vanity. There are many noble aspects of this field. You might do reconstructive surgeries after a bad accident, and help a patient start to feel like their old self again. Plastic surgeons sometimes also participate in Doctors Without Borders, fixing disfigurement and cosmetic birth defects in developing nations. You know that real beauty is on the inside - and you...

@Dr. Xie: Yes there is the choice of lifestyle as well. I think lifestyle choice and doing what you love go well together in making that decision. Though the two may not always agree with each other they are able to make compromises to balance things out. Medicine may not make us all billionaires but it makes us enough to let us live comfortably :) If we wanted to become obscenely rich we would've tried to event some brilliant app. I really like what you said there: Aesthetic procedure fill...

I chose base on lifestyle. I like a free and easy life. Happy and simple . I tried surgical training for a while and hate it. I love what I am doing now. Botox , fillers , laser , family medicine and holiday. However , there is not much difference in your choice as long as you r dedicated and good at what you are doing. Medicine will not make me a billionaire but we will all live comfortably and happily. My only regret is not enjoying more of my life when I was a younger doctor and getting to ca...

Making a decision of what specialty or even sub-specialty can be difficult. It will depend on everyone personal experience, clinical encounters, mentors around, and ultimately what is his/her choice. But, sometime people are not able to get into their specialty of choice, possibly due to tough competition, and should they gave up and try the second or third or even fourth option that is not their preference. I am lucky enough to get into the specialty of my choice, which is Gastroenterology. The...

As doctors we all basically have gone down this path. Which specialty shall I choose? Will this specialty give me fulfilment? Will I be happy doing this work? Who should I ask to help me make this decision. I don't know about any of you guys out there but I have taken numerous personality tests and "which medical specialty should you choose?" tests. We may not fall into the stereotypes that are believed to be associated with certain fields but that doesn't mean we shouldn't...
