Pain is pervasive in almost everyone. But, the treatment of pain becomes complicated when it comes to potential drug abusers. Striking a balance between pain management and reasonable opioid prescribing is more challenging than it sounds.

Opioid prescription can be judiciously prescribed according to the WHO stepladder approach for pain management. The guidelines state that a pain scale of 10/10 warrants the prescription of an opioid while a pain scale of greater than or equal to 7/10 warrants weak opioid prescription.
