Pregnancy has been long considered as the de facto exclusion criteria in clinical trials. Although the systematic omission of pregnant women in research contributed to a substantial knowledge gap, the situation is about to change.

I am very thankful to the author of this article for writing a great piece. Pregnant women indeed have complex physiology that varies from every individual and from the normal expected responses to stress, medications, and interventions. Therefore, results of studies that involve pregnant women as participants will fail to approach normality. Moreover, it will be unethical to subject the mother and fetus to increased risk and violate the first principle of medical practice which is to do no harm...
